The Seven Year Slip: A Journey Through Time and Emotion.

Serene Reads & Dramatic Escapes by Moushmi

At Serene Reads & Dramatic Escapes, I love diving into stories that combine magic, romance, and personal growth, which is exactly what The Seven Year Slip promised. But, as I’ll explore in this review, not every story delivers the emotional punch you expect. This book touches on themes of grief, love, and finding yourself, but the journey wasn’t as impactful as I’d hoped it would be.

Spotlight On The Blog:

There’s something undeniably intriguing about the idea of a magical apartment in New York City—one where time slips, allowing you to meet someone from the past. That’s what initially drew me to Ashley Poston’s The Seven Year Slip, a book I’ve seen making the rounds on Bookstagram. With all the buzz surrounding it, I set out with high hopes, expecting a heartwarming romance that would weave time travel and emotion into something unforgettable. And while the book had its moments, it didn’t quite meet the expectations I had in mind.

Quote from the Book:

“It was as if time knew she needed more moments to figure herself out, even if it was only temporary.”

Review:

Ashley Poston's The Seven Year Slip intrigued me with its unique premise—a New York apartment where time shifts, allowing Clementine, the protagonist, to meet someone from seven years in the past. With high expectations set by the buzz on Bookstagram, I anticipated a magical romance filled with emotional depth. While the story had its charming moments, I found the pacing slow, and the connection between the characters didn’t feel as strong as I had hoped.

Though the romance and time-travel elements didn’t fully live up to my expectations, the book touches on important themes of grief, love, and self-discovery. Clementine's journey to understand her desires while grappling with the loss of her aunt adds a heartfelt layer to the narrative. Poston’s writing is light and easy to follow, making it a cozy, magical read, even if the emotional stakes felt somewhat flat.

In the end, The Seven Year Slip offers a sweet, whimsical escape, perfect for fans of light magical realism and quirky romance. However, if you’re looking for a story with deeper emotional impact, it may not completely hit the mark.

About the Author:

Ashley Poston is a bestselling author known for her feel-good, quirky novels that often mix romance with magical elements. The Seven Year Slip continues in that tradition, offering readers a whimsical escape into love, time, and second chances. Poston’s light-hearted writing style has earned her a place in the hearts of readers who enjoy stories that blend the everyday with the fantastical.

Final Thoughts:

Perhaps my own high expectations set me up for disappointment with The Seven Year Slip. I went in hoping for a magical romance with layers of emotional depth, but the story fell a little short of that mark. If you’re looking for a light, quirky romance with hints of magic and a focus on self-discovery, this book could be an enjoyable read. But if you’re after something that digs a little deeper and pulls you in emotionally, you may end up feeling like I did—wishing for more.

Discovering the Magic of The Secret World of Arrietty

Serene Reads & Dramatic Escapes by Moushmi

Here I delve into heartwarming reads or looking to escape into the world of anime, dramas, or books that transport you into different worlds, this is the place to be. Studio Ghibli is known for creating stunning, heartfelt films, and The Secret World of Arrietty is no exception. Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and based on The Borrowers by Mary Norton, this beautifully animated film transports viewers into a whimsical world hidden just beneath our feet.

It tells the story of Arrietty, a tiny "borrower" who lives under the floorboards of a human house with her family, navigating life in a world not made for people their size. The film explores themes of friendship, bravery, and the delicate balance between survival and discovery, all with Ghibli’s signature touch of magic.

Summary of the Story:

Arrietty and her family live in secret, borrowing small objects they need from the humans who live above them. Their quiet, hidden existence is threatened when Sho, a boy who comes to stay at the house, discovers Arrietty. The two form an unlikely friendship, but this connection puts her family's safety at risk. The story revolves around Arrietty’s longing for freedom and exploration, even as she learns about the dangers of humans. The gentle pacing of the film allows viewers to become immersed in this small but vivid world, where every object is monumental and every action carries weight.

Review:

What makes The Secret World of Arrietty stand out is the way it captures a sense of wonder and scale. The film beautifully highlights the contrast between Arrietty's small world and the vast human world, making everyday objects feel magical. The animation, with its stunning attention to detail, perfectly captures the lushness of nature and the cozy, hidden spaces Arrietty calls home. The score, composed by Cécile Corbel, adds to the dreamy atmosphere, enhancing the emotional depth of the film.

Arrietty’s friendship with Sho, a boy struggling with illness and isolation, adds an emotional core to the story. While their friendship is brief, it is filled with tenderness and mutual understanding. The film’s quieter moments, focusing on Arrietty’s inner conflict between fear and curiosity, are some of its most powerful. It’s a reminder of the magic that exists in small acts of kindness and the courage it takes to step into the unknown. The Secret World of Arrietty is a film that leaves a lasting impression, perfect for fans of Studio Ghibli’s gentler, more introspective stories.

The Secret World of Arrietty is a magical, heartwarming tale that transports viewers into a hidden world of tiny wonders, told with the grace and care we’ve come to expect from Studio Ghibli.

The Stationery Shop of Tehran: A Journey Through Love and Heartbreak.

Serene Reads & Dramatic Escapes by Moushmi

On my literary journey, I often stumble upon books that capture my heart and leave me reflecting for days. One such gem is The Stationery Shop of Tehran by Marjan Kamali. A beautifully written story, this book is a delicate dance between love, politics, and the unpredictability of life.

Spotlight On The Blog:

At Serene Reads & Dramatic Escapes by Moushmi, I delve into stories that evoke emotion, inspire reflection, and, most importantly, leave a lasting impact. The Stationery Shop of Tehran is one such story, masterfully weaving a narrative set against the tumultuous backdrop of Iran in the 1950s. In this blog, I will explore the depth of Kamali’s storytelling and the complex characters she brings to life.

Quote from the Book:

"It had been over sixty years, and yet, the smell of jasmine from a stationery shop could still bring her to her knees."

Review:

Kamali’s The Stationery Shop of Tehran is a hauntingly beautiful novel that explores themes of love, loss, and the inevitability of fate. What I found particularly compelling about the book was the deep emotional connection I formed with the characters. Roya, a romantic at heart, is relatable in her hopes, dreams, and the painful realities she faces. Her longing for Bahman and the life they could have had felt achingly real to me, a sentiment many readers will likely share.

Bahman is a character whose actions are deeply tied to the political upheavals of his time. His passion for politics, his sense of duty, and his struggle between personal happiness and national service add layers to his character that are not immediately apparent. His decisions, though often frustrating, are rooted in a sense of responsibility and loyalty to his family and country, making him a complex character.

Mr. Fakhri, the shop owner, serves as more than just a supporting character. He is the catalyst for Roya and Bahman’s love, and his presence throughout the book offers stability amidst the chaos of the characters' lives. His own backstory, one of quiet sorrow, mirrors the larger theme of missed opportunities and choices that define the course of a life.

The historical context is not just a backdrop but an active force in shaping the characters' lives. I felt like I was walking through the bustling city streets, smelling the aromas of Persian food, and witnessing the intense political debates firsthand. The novel is not without its heartbreaks, but I appreciate how Kamali does not shy away from exploring the complexities of love and life. The ending, though bittersweet, is filled with quiet moments of resolution and acceptance, reminding readers that some questions may remain unanswered, but peace can still be found.

About the Author:

Marjan Kamali is an Iranian-American author known for her poignant storytelling and exploration of themes such as love, exile, and identity. Her works often delve into the lives of Iranian characters, offering readers a glimpse into the rich cultural and political history of Iran. The Stationery Shop of Tehran is her second novel, following Together Tea. Kamali’s writing is praised for its elegance, emotional depth, and ability to transport readers to a different time and place.

Final Thoughts:

The Stationery Shop of Tehran left me with a lingering sense of nostalgia and wonder. It’s a love story that is rich with cultural nuance, driven by unforgettable characters, and filled with the rawness of human emotion. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy love stories shaped as much by history as by the hearts of its characters.
