As the layers of their relationship are peeled back, we witness the depth of their connection—and the tragedy that changed everything.

Review:

Love & Other Words is a narrative about love, loss, and the things we keep silent about, not just a second-chance romance. The reader can gradually learn what caused their separation and whether they can reconcile thanks to the deft use of a parallel timeline that skillfully combines their past and present.

The way Christina Lauren portrays the ephemeral, never-truly-fading aspect of love struck a chord with me the most. Macy's story serves as a reminder that certain loves never truly go away, molding us into the people we are today. The sadness is made much more painful by Macy and Elliot's genuine, real bond.

Long after I completed the novel, I could not stop thinking about that line: "I never got to fall out of love." It illustrates how, in certain cases, love is an emotion that stays even when you do not want it to. Because of the masterful portrayal of Macy's conflict between moving on and being tormented by the love she lost, her story is both incredibly touching and sympathetic.

Deliberate pacing permits a gradual escalation of emotion and tension. That, in my opinion, is what sets Love & Other Words apart—it allows the reader to fully experience the characters' feelings by not skipping any emotional beats.

Convenience Store Woman follows Keiko Furukura, a 36-year-old woman who has worked in a convenience store for 18 years. Keiko is content with her life as a convenience store worker, finding peace in the structured routine of the job. 

However, the people around her, from family to friends, constantly question her life choices, pressuring her to conform to societal norms—such as finding a "better" career or getting married. As Keiko struggles to fit into society’s mold, she remains drawn to the simplicity and satisfaction her work gives her. Through Keiko’s life, Sayaka Murata portrays a sharp critique of societal expectations, questioning what it truly means to be normal.

Review:

Convenience Store Woman is a novel that left me reflecting long after I finished it. Keiko Furukura, our protagonist, challenges what it means to live a fulfilling life. The book opens a window into her mind, where every decision is rooted in logic, detached from the emotions that often drive other people’s lives. Through Keiko, Sayaka Murata cleverly critiques society’s tendency to push everyone into the same mold.

What struck me most is how Murata captures the mundane yet rhythmic world of the convenience store. The detailed descriptions of the daily routine, from stocking shelves to greeting customers, made me appreciate the small yet significant actions that fill our days. Keiko’s joy in the simplicity of her work contrasts sharply with the dissatisfaction of those around her who can't comprehend her choices.

The novel also explores important themes like societal pressure, the desire for conformity, and the fear of being "different." Keiko is expected to find a stable career or settle down in a traditional relationship, which raises the question—why is it so hard for society to accept someone who finds happiness in a non-conventional way? The introduction of Shiraha, a man who also rejects societal expectations but in a much more negative, parasitic way, creates an interesting foil for Keiko, showing the spectrum of rebellion.

While the book might appear to be simple at first glance, its exploration of these heavy themes, wrapped in light humor and quirky characters, is what makes Convenience Store Woman so compelling. Murata’s portrayal of Keiko is a reminder that life doesn’t need to follow a set path, and that happiness can come from the most unexpected places.

Summary of the Book:
Ove is a Grumpy old man, the kind of man who points out when the neighbors are breaking the rules and grumbles about everything. But as the story unfolds, you realize there’s much more to Ove than his stern demeanor. Through interactions with his quirky neighbors and flashbacks to his past, we learn about the love and loss that shaped him. At its heart, "A Man Called Ove" is a story of unexpected friendships and finding meaning in life, even when you think it's over.

Review:

Now, let’s talk about why this book resonates so deeply. From my perspective, Ove’s story is like peeling back layers. At first, I thought he was simply a Grumpy old man  annoyed by the world around him. But as you get to know him, his vulnerability shines through. I couldn’t help but feel a connection to Ove’s loneliness and his struggle to hold onto memories of his late wife, Sonja. The author, Fredrik Backman, has an incredible way of making us care about a character who might not seem likable at first.

What I loved most is how Backman interweaves humor with sorrow. Just when you think Ove is too cold-hearted, you witness a tender moment that melts your heart. And the supporting characters, like Parvaneh and her family, show us that no one is ever truly alone, even if they feel that way.

This book is a reminder that behind every gruff exterior is a story waiting to be told. Ove's journey from isolation to finding a new family in his neighbors left me feeling a deep sense of hope.

“One finds a way of living for the sake of someone else.” This line captures the essence of Ove's transformation and growth throughout the book. It’s about finding purpose in the people around us, even when life seems bleak.
